Proper handling of polycarbonate requires specific attention to its hygroscopic nature and processing characteristics:
Material Preparation:
Drying: 120°C for pure PC, 110°C for modified grades (4-10 hours)
Machine Selection: Special plasticizing systems for flame-retardant alloys
Mold Design Considerations:
Mold temperature: 80-100°C (100-130°C for glass-filled grades)
Gate design: Pin gates for small parts (70% of thickest section)
Venting: 0.03-0.06mm depth
Draft angles: 30'-1°
Processing Parameters:
Melt temperature: 270-320°C (230-270°C for some modified grades)
Injection speed: Variable according to application
Back pressure: ~10 bar (adjustable)
Residence time: Limited to prevent degradation
Special attention must be paid to material changes during recycling and proper purging procedures to maintain product quality.
