Plastics are divided into thermosets and thermoplastics, with the latter being recyclable. Polymer structures are either linear (including branched) or cross-linked (network or bulk). Plastics offer chemical resistance, gloss, transparency, electrical insulation, light weight, strength, ease of processing, low cost, and versatility. They can be colored easily and some withstand high temperatures. General-purpose plastics (e.g., PE, PP) are low-cost and widely used, while engineering plastics offer better stability and physical properties, often combining rigidity with toughness. Key advantages include corrosion resistance, low manufacturing cost, durability, water resistance, light weight, moldability, insulation, and potential for fuel conversion.
